Small 'crew' Vs Big 'Crowd'

Disclaimer : This article is based on my experiences in my professional life and the lessons I have learnt from the situations I have encountered.

Through this article I tried to clear some of the ambiguity's ,at least few , in young minds who are about to take the first step in new school which pays while they learn !!

In these times, when image matters a lot, job seekers flock to the big and known names in search of brand value and prestige. However working in a big firm comes with its own disadvantages such as getting lost among huge workforce and remaining confined to one’s work profile. Likewise working in a smaller firm is not without its benefits. The decision as to which kind of firm is better for you depends on the stage of your career and what you are seeking from the job.

At the beginning of your career, working for small place gives you more exposure. The speed at which you earn in a small firm is nothing compared to speed at which you earn in a big firm. In a big firm you become one among the many. You don't know whom to approach for help as everyone is busy in their work. In small firm you will find people to sit and explain to you. You feel like a part of the organisation.

The advantage of a big company is that you can get lost in the crowd. Getting lost in the crowd is a double edged sword. You do your work and then, you are able to come home and that is it. Then, On the other hand, a disadvantage is that after being lost in the crowd, you will not get the recognition if you are doing your job well. In most cases a congratulation go through many mouths before even getting to you and then is never said. Usually people forget to thank a whole line of people when they are all directly involved in a project!

The smaller companies are usually ignored by potential employees, who focus their efforts more on large firms that have name and recognition. However, during tough economic times, small firms are actually better positioned to hire. They may have a business plan that is more progressive than big companies and the best part is you will be playing a crucial role in that plan, so they are able to succeed despite a poor economic situation.

The smaller firms are more suited to enterprising individuals. Big companies can’t move as fast as you can .This is by, far the most important advantage for small companies. You may have a great idea, but the same idea is kicking around the big company's competitor too. The issue for them is that they have a huge organisation to drag behind them.

The small company environment is so empowering and invigorating when you realise that you have a huge impact on the success or failure of your company. Talking about the negatives of the small firm, however in a small organisation you have to perform both clerical and managerial duties. You have to switch roles with dexterity. In a big organisation the job profile is consistent, structured in black and white and you don’t have to do anything apart from that.

Bottom Line:

Comparing the two options, In a small firm the potential to be closely involved in the organisation’s growth opens up opportunities to learn more about the business and contribute in various areas which may not be available in large organisation with the set structures and process in place.

On the flip side larger organisation offer a more stable working environment and in some cases a more competitive rewards package which can be equally attractive.

Make the right choice at right time !
